“As a first-generation college student, the FYE Program holds a special place in my heart. I understand and acknowledge the obstacles that you may face. I know the motivation it takes to be a college student first hand. I was born in South America, Guyana and for me, receiving a college education was the ultimate American dream. I have earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Educational Counseling. With these degrees, I am dedicated to guiding students to reach their dream of graduating from college. As a counselor for Victor Valley College for the past 5 years, I am here to assist you in developing an academic plan that is consistent with your goals and natural strengths as an individual. Your first year in college is crucial to your success. As your counselor, I am dedicated to providing you with a sense of confidence and mentorship. I look forward to meeting you and welcome you to Victor Valley College!”

Dr. Corey Timberlake, Counselor and Umoja Co-Coordinator

"I am inspired each day as the FYE and UMOJA Counselor at Victor Valley College because I know I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors who have come before me. When I look into the eyes of our students I see the hope for the future that we are all working so hard to create. As a first-generation college graduate, I have seen firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate a path toward higher education in pursuit of career goals. This is why I have dedicated the past 7 years of my career to working with students who have been historically underrepresented and under-served. My passion lies in ensuring students feel seen, heard, and valued as we support them in their own pursuit of success.

I am a Chicago, IL. native who attended Nogales High School in La Puente, California. I left home to attend New Mexico State University on an athletic scholarship. Balancing the rigors of being a student athlete, I was successful in attaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work, with a minor in Child Psychology. I was inspired to continue my education and later pursued a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Counseling from Redlands University and later a Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University.

I bring a dedication to equality and excellence in education by leading, learning, and connecting to empower students as they work to reach their goals."
